With an ever-growing shadow of data looming over them, communications service providers (CSPs) have much to gain from making the Big Data leap. With data network traffic from smart phones forecast to grow more than 50-fold by 2016, there is an urgency to leverage data analytics to outmaneuver their competitors, reduce costs and streamline their operations.

 

Likewise, CSPs are looking to extend their existing M2M offerings or break into IoT services with data analytics in a private cloud running on converged cloud infrastructure platforms using, for example, open-source Hadoop software, for massive scalability, and significantly improved performance with half the standard rack space footprint and half the power consumption.

SDN/NFV ENABLED CARRIER CLOUD

Service agility is the underlining selling point for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN), followed by a reduced CAPEX and OPEX. It’s a network metamorphisis, as CSPs eagerly look to progressively move various network functions into cloud environments that are NFV and/or SDN enabled, using automated software-based processes on standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. The result is accelerated revenues by rapidly deploying the new services subscribers want now, rather than later.
